It’s the time of year where many of us consider shaking up our routine, including what we eat. Many of us opt to cut out meat and dairy products, through the aptly named “veganuary”.

Veganuary was founded in 2014 and anyone taking part has to stick to a vegan diet for the whole of January. It’s an opportunity to try new foods and check out some new and innovative companies that are at the forefront of not just changing the way we eat, but also helping towards combatting climate change.

So whether you’re a full-time vegan, partaking in veganuary, or just a bit of a foodie, check out these companies specialising in vegan and vegetarian foods.

Location: York
Total amount raised: £16.0m

Vegan Food Group produces and sells vegan fried chicken, made from wheat flour, as well as a range of sides and dipping sauces.

VFG was founded in September 2020 and since then has gone through three funding rounds,most recently £6.00m in 2023. The company featured on the MC2 High Growth 50 high-growth list in 2024, and has also hit one of our environmental signals for sustainable farming and food production.

Better Dairy

Location: London
Total amount raised: £18.0m

Better Dairy creates dairy products without the use of animals, by fermenting yeast.

Founded in 2020, Better Dairy has raised a total of £18.0m, bringing it to number 10 on our list. The company featured on the Startups 100 in 2024, and has featured on the FoodTech 500 three times. It also attended the Entrepreneur First accelerator programme in 2019-2020.

Better Dairy has hit two of our social and governance signals: age diversity of directors and social impact accolades.

MIGHTY

Location: Leeds
Total amount raised: £19.6m

MIGHTY produces alternative milk products made from peas.

This dairy-alternative company was founded in 2018. In just a few years, MIGHTY has secured £19.6m in funding across seven successful fundraising rounds.

The company used the investment to install a new manufacturing technology to its production, in aid to making their product taste more like dairy milk.

Mytos

Location: London
Total amount raised: £20.6m

Mytos develops a range of biotech machinery to automate the mammalian cell growth process, for cell therapy and clean meat companies.

Since 2016, the biotech company has been through five rounds of funding, raising a total of £20.6m, and has received three grants. Mytos attended the Panacea Stars accelerator programme in 2016-2017, and has also hit our ‘sustainable farming and food production’ environmental signal.

Hoxton Farms

Location: London
Total amount raised: £22.3m

Hoxton Farms produces lab grown animal fat as an alternative to traditional agricultural practices.

The company has gone through two funding rounds since it was incorporated in 2020. It has also featured on two high-growth lists, most recently the Startups 100 in 2024.

Hoxton Farms has hit two of our environmental signals: sustainable farming and food production, and environmental accolades, as well as hitting our ‘age diversity of directors’ social and governance signal.

Ivy Farm Technologies

Location: Oxford
Total amount raised: £31.5m

Ivy Farm Technologies creates technology for producing cultured meat.

This University of Oxford spinout has raised a significant £31.5m through five funding rounds. The company was incorporated in 2019 and since then has featured on two high-growth lists: the TechRound 100 and the FoodTech 500.

Ivy Farm Technologies also hit one of our environmental signals for sustainable farming and food production.

Uncommon

Location: Cambridge
Total amount raised: £38.4m

Uncommon produces cell-based meat alternatives.

This meat alternative company has been through four funding rounds, raised £10.3m in 2024 alone, as well as receiving a grant for £1.03m. It attended the Entrepreneur Accelerator in 2019-2020, and has featured on two high-growth lists: the FoodTech 500 and the HolonIQ Europe Climate Tech.

The company has hit two of our environmental signals: sustainable farming and food production, and environmental accolades, and hit our social and governance signal for having a diversity in age range amongst its directors.

Neat

Location: London
Total amount raised: £43.0m

Neat operates a plant-based fast food burger chain. This restaurant chain was incorporated in 2019 and has locations in London, New York and Milan. It received its first fundraising just a few months after it opened and since then has gone on to raise £43.0m. It featured on the HolonIQ Europe Climate Tech high-growth list in 2023.

The company also hit our ‘environmental accolades’ signal.

Location: London
Total amount raised: £53.3m

THIS produces a range of meat replacement foods.

Founded in 2017, THIS is one of the older companies on our list — and it comes in at number two, having raised £53.3m. The company has featured on a huge nine high-growth lists, most recently Sifted 100: UK and Ireland in 2024.

As well as hitting several growth signals, the company has hit Beauhurst signals for environmental accolades, sustainable farming and food production, having a patent, and more.

ENOUGH

Location: Glasgow
Total amount raised: £91.0m

ENOUGH produces mycoprotein, a sustainable alternative to meat which can be used in food manufacturing and processing, for both human and animal food.

The only Scottish company on the list, ENOUGH comes in at number one having raised a massive £91.0m, almost double any other company. ENOUGH is a spinout of the University of Strathclyde and was set up in 2017. Since then it’s raised nine funding rounds and received three grants.
